President dedicates India's own payment gateway 'RuPay'

President Pranab Mukherjee unveiled the indigenous card at a function in Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Dedicating it to the nation, Mukherjee said India is one of the few countries in the world to have its own card payment gateway.

The RuPay platform -- developed by National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI)-- is being used by certain banks like ICICI, State Bank of India, Punjab National Bank, among others, for clearing and settlement.

RuPay, which works on three channels -- ATMs, Point of Sales (POS) and online sales, is the seventh such payment gateway in the world.

A variant of pre-paid RuPay card would shortly be launched by IRCTC, which will help in booking railway tickets.

RuPay will not only reduce dependence on cash, but will offer users diverse set of payment option within the country, Mukherjee said.

NPCI Chairman Balachandran M said the NPCI board plans to take RuPay card overseas and is already in talks with Discover Financial Services in the US and JDC in Japan for partnership.

Speaking on the occasion, Financial Services Secretary G S Sandhu said RuPay would be available at a cost which is much less than those of international cards.

For clearing and settlement of each transactions, banks will have to pay 40 per cent lower fees in RuPay platform compared to other international platforms.

The public sector banks have already installed 25,331 RuPay cards enabled ATMS and 9,000 more ATMs would be installed in the current fiscal, Sandhu said.

The RuPay card is accepted at all ATMs (1.6 lakh plus), 95 per cent of PoS terminals (9.45 lakh plus) and most of the eCom merchants (about 10,000) in the country.

Chardham yatra begins a year after massive calamity

A year after the 'Char Dham' yatra was marred by massive flash floods, the annual pilgrimage today began with the reopening of the sacred portals of the Himalayan shrines of Gangotri and Yamunotrifor devotees.

Amid extensive arrangements to ensure safety of pilgrims, the portals of Gangotri dham dedicated to 'Mother Ganges', located in Uttarakashi district, were opened at 1201 hrs on the auspicious occasion of Akshaya Tritiya after the traditional six-month winter break.

A large number of devotees flocked to the temple located at a height of over 10000 ft to witness the ceremony marked by vedic rituals held by the chief priest of the temple in the presence of senior administrative and police officials, Bhatwari SDM K K Singh said.

The Yamunotri shrine dedicated to 'Mother Yamuna' in the same district was also reopened to devotees after special prayers and rituals performed by the head priest at 1225 hrs.

The other two famous temples Kedarnath and Badrinath, which are part of the char dhams, are also scheduled to be reopened this week on May 4 and May 5 respectively.

Areas close to Kedarnath bore the brunt of the June calamity.

The char dham yatra was struck by the unprecedented natural calamitylast year causing largescale loss of lives and property in areas close to the four famous shrines in Garhwal Himalayas.

As it is the first season after the tragedy brought the yatra to an abrupt halt, elaborate arrangements have been made this year for safe conduct of the journey, including deployment of security and disaster relief personnel, biometric registration of pilgrims and issuing of weather alerts on mobile phones.

The Himalayan shrines are closed for six months every year during winter when they become snowbound.

Closed every year in October-November, they are reopened in April-May.

Lakhs of devotees and tourists from all over the country and abroad visit the shrines during the char dham yatra considered the mainstay of the state's economy.

73% Indians from big cities on FB despite being under age 13

Notwithstanding the strict norms that prohibit children under age 13 years from opening an account on social networking site Facebook, a whopping 73 per cent kids aged between 8 and 13 from tier-I & tier-II cities in India are using the site, according to an Assocham survey.

The trend is dangerous as it can make children vulnerable to cyber bullying and online sexual abuse, the survey said.

"Minors lack the experience or judgement to use a social network and this raises the scary possibility of predators tracking down kids who reveal their age in an online chat, to cyber bullying and sexual abuse," Chairman of Assocham Health Committee B K Rao said.

As per the survey findings, nearly 25 per cent kids aged 13 years, 22 per cent aged 11 and 15 per cent aged 10 are on Facebook, while 5 to 10 per cent kids aged 8 & 9 years are also active on the site.

Terming the statistics as "sad and shocking", the survey found that majority of the parents help kids lie to get on Facebook, only to repent later as the kids become addicted to the social networking site.

In fact, 75 per cent parents are aware of their child signing up for the site, and 82 per cent out of these parents helped create the child's account, it pointed out.

The survey was conducted on 4,200 parents of children aged between 8 years and 13 years in major metropolitan cities like Delhi-NCR, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Pune, Lucknow and Dehradun, among others
